You cannot miss a day at Libbenau .Yes, sure its very touristy, but oh so full of neat and complete aspects of life as it was for the Modras who lived in the Spreewald ( at Werben) for at least 250 years.
The best thing ever is the opportunity to relax while someone pushes you around. You don't get that for that price anywhere else in the Country.
Once up on your feet , you will need hours just to explore the living village of the Wends along the canal .
My favourite feature was the solid boats , the local timber cut to make them, the boat building workshop with all it wooden clamps and the use of these low energy transport systems for thousands of years.
We did of course have time to party in the beautiful harbour cafe area .
If only we had brought their tradition of houses with attics to Australia the good Wends down under would not be throwing things out like they do in Australia
Even the sheds have great capacity with low ceilings and storage above. There's is a warm workers paradise
And see, the locals aren't out to impress , living as they do like there forebears lived for thousands of years before This shed is built entirely out of local materials and is fully functional like Dads tree hayshed at Gruyere Why have we, in Australia persisted with high ceilings ?, Look at this for a heater . Glass tiles make the fireplace look so unobtrusive and the comfort zone extends up 2 storeys above
So relaxing that we even had time for dancing
My favourite aspect was their simple but very strong boats , how they build them and how they have used the local timber and workshops to make them for hundreds of years . All part of efficient transport ( including cucumbers ) and working small farms
